The post-Labor Day season in San Diego still has a lot to offer including great weather and smaller crowds.
It has been a phenomenal summer for boating in San Diego. Despite the warmer waters that have kept our divers busy here at Dockside Divers, the fishing was amazing, the beach was beautiful, and the boating has never been better!
As the summer winds down, we look toward the fall with its promise of cooler weather (finally!), harvest decor, and all the unique things to do here in San Diego. We may not have the beautiful show of changing leaves that turn to snowy winters, but we do have seasonal perks to enjoy!
Making the best of fall boating season
One of the great things about the fall boating season in San Diego is that tourism slows down a little. Popular places around town are a little less crowded and can be enjoyed by locals without fighting the masses.
Local boaters, and even those who live in the region but dock their boats in San Diego, enjoy some of the best weather of the year in the fall, and it comes without all the crowds and fuss of summer. The airport is less crowded, the parking spots more plentiful, and the waterways a bit less congested, making fall a more relaxed, casual experience.
Take the chance to take a tour
There is still plenty of good weather in the fall for a little day trip or an overnight adventure to a nearby boating destination. Have you been planning to try out a new mooring spot, but just haven’t taken the time to plan it? Autumn is the perfect time for it!
- Catalina Island – Catalina will be much easier to book after the busy summer season. You can use the Santa Catalina online system to book a mooring. There are multiple locations to stay around the island.
- Glorietta Bay – Spend the day at lovely Glorietta Bay on Coronado Island or book a mooring through the Port of San Diego. Mooring is free, so book early!
- Mission Bay – Boaters can book free mooring locations in three spots in Mission Bay: San Juan Cove, Santa Barbara Cove, and Mariners Basin.
- La Playa – Moorings at La Playa, between the San Diego Yacht Club and Point Loma, can also be booked through the Port.
Venture out a little on land
If you’ve had enough adventure on the high seas, there are plenty of fall activities to enjoy on land around San Diego County.
September is apple picking season in Julian. Head up to the mountain areas to pick your own or at least enjoy the cooler air, mountain breezes, and, of course, Julian’s famous apple pies!
For families with children, October is Kids Free San Diego month where hundreds of attractions such as museums, theme parks, and restaurants offer free or discounted fares for the younger set. This is a great time to explore something new in San Diego!
If you are a craft beer aficionado, November 2-11 is SD Beer Week with events being held in various locations across the county, including many local breweries and restaurants. San Diego has a thriving craft beer industry which boasts more than 130 home-grown breweries.
The racing season at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club continues through the fall with many concerts and foodie events on top of the world-class horse racing that the club is known for.
Whether on the water or on land, you can’t beat the great weather and easy exploring that fall offers to us here in sunny San Diego!
